NASCAR Cup Series: Josh Berry Suffers Life-Threatening Crash At Daytona International Speedway
NASCAR driver Josh Berry experienced a harrowing crash during the late stages of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. The incident occurred when Berry’s car lost control, flipped over, and smashed into the perimeter fence whilst upside down with just two laps remaining in the race.
At the time, Berry was in a promising second place, closely trailing the race leader, Austin Cindric. The car flip was caused by what appeared to be a significant bump from Cindric’s car.
Thankfully, after an immediate medical evaluation at the infield care center, Berry was released and managed to give a reassuring thumbs-up to the crowd.
Whilst speaking to the media after the race, Berry commented, as quoted by Thesportsrush.com:
“Aside from the car flipping over it wasn’t really that bad of a deal … It was just a weird angle, right? the car crushed pretty good because it was actually upside down. I mean, the car did its job. I feel okay. It probably looked worse than it felt. Just disappointed because I really thought we could’ve won that thing.”
The race concluded with Harrison Burton claiming victory, while Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell secured the second and third positions, respectively. Austin Cindric, involved in the incident with Berry, ended the race in 18th place out.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another controversy earlier in the month at Richmond Raceway involving NASCAR drivers Austin Dillon and Joey Logano. Dillon, who intentionally collided with Logano, and then as a result Denny Hamlin, faced significant penalties for the move after he celebrated the victory.
NASCAR will be looking at Berry’s horrific crash to determine if any penalties are due.
