What is an AMBER Alert?

The AMBER Alert is a nationwide notification system that exists to inform the public about missing children.

There are four criteria that must be met in order for an AMBER Alert to be issued. Law enforcement must be able to confirm that an abduction has occurred, the child must be at risk of serious injury or death, there must be a sufficient description of child, captor or captor’s vehicle, and the child must be under the age of 18.

AMBER is an acronym for “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.”

The alerts work by broadcasting through radio and tv, as well as on road signs, cell phones and other data-enabled devices.

The AMBER Alert system is used in all 50 states.
